The Tokyo metropolitan government reported 727 new coronavirus cases Monday, dropping below the 1,000 mark for the first time in six days amid lingering concerns of a fifth wave of the virus ahead of the Olympics.

Infections in the capital had topped the 1,000 mark for five consecutive days until Sunday, when 1,008 new daily coronavirus cases were reported.

The seven-day rolling average of new cases in Tokyo, which is currently under a fourth COVID-19 state of emergency, was up 45.4 percent from the previous week at 1,100.4 per day.

With the Olympics opening ceremony set to take place on Friday, public concern remains high that the games could become a superspreader event amid the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus, first detected in India.
