Australia's Olympic softball team opened its training camp Saturday after becoming the first group of foreign athletes to arrive ahead of this summer's Tokyo Games.

The practice session at Ota Sports Park in Ota, Gunma Prefecture, north of Tokyo, was closed to the public and the press in order to limit the risk of coronavirus infection.

Members of the team, who landed at Narita airport near Tokyo on Tuesday, smiled and gave greetings in Japanese after arriving at the training ground by chartered bus.

Following a team photo, the players warmed up and took fielding practice.

All members of the team have been vaccinated for the coronavirus and will undergo daily polymerase chain reaction tests during their stay as a precaution.

The team will hold its training camp until July 17 and plans to play a number of warm-up games against university and corporate teams.

Because of difficulties with coronavirus infection guidelines, the team is looking at staging meet-and-greet activities with local residents online.
