Kei Nishikori, who has yet to return to tennis after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left hip in January, will not compete in the upcoming U.S. Open in New York, his management company said Monday.

The former world No. 4 had hoped to be back on the ATP Tour this summer but his name was not on the singles entry list for the Aug. 29-Sept. 11 U.S. Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam of the season, released by the organizers on Monday.

He has also withdrawn from three events in July and August -- the Atlanta Open, Citi Open, and Winston-Salem Open.

The continued absence of Nishikori, who has been invited to play in the San Diego Open in September and the Rakuten Japan Open in October, from the tour due to a long recovery period raises questions about his future.

Since turning professional in 2007, the 32-year-old Japanese has captured 12 career ATP singles titles, his most recent tournament win coming at the Brisbane International in 2019.

He reached a career-high ranking of four shortly after becoming the first Asian male player to reach a Grand Slam final at the 2014 U.S. Open.

Nishikori, currently ranked No. 365, has not competed in an ATP Tour event since playing in Indian Wells, California, last October.
