A group of North Korean defectors in South Korea said Friday it had launched balloons carrying leaflets critical of N. Korea earlier this week, violating a law that bans such an act.

The group called Fighters for Free North Korea launched 10 large balloons close to the border containing 500,000 leaflets that criticized North Korea's nuclear missile development, it said.

The launching of such balloons with anti-Pyongyang leaflets is banned by the Development of Inter-Korean Relations Act, which was revised in March. The act stipulates imprisonment of up to 3 years or fines of up to 30 million won ($27,000) for violators.

The law was revised following an accusation from Pyongyang that Seoul allowed the dissemination of such leaflets by groups run by defectors.
