The United States topped the gold medal for the third Olympics in a row on Sunday, thanks to the country's women's volleyball team's win on the final day of the Tokyo Games.

The volleyball team defeated Brazil to secure the 39th gold medal of the games for the U.S., which had 113 medals overall. China had 38 gold and a total of 88 for second place.

New Olympic medal tally records of 27 gold and 58 overall for Japan saw the host nation finish in third place in the table.

Britain captured 22 gold medals, 65 in all, for fourth place and was followed in fifth by the Russian Olympic Committee, which won 20 gold and had a total haul of 71.
