Hideki Matsuyama barely made the cut at the Masters golf tournament after a double-bogey at the 18th hole gave him a scare Friday.

A second-round 2-over 74 dropped the 2021 Masters champion from Japan into a share of 50th place at 6 over for the tournament.

Matsuyama needed four shots to reach the green on the par-4 final hole after his tee shot hit a tree on the left side of the fairway.

"It was a disappointing finish," Matsuyama said after a round that included three birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey. "I made a good par at No. 17, so I wanted to finish with another par."

First-round leader Bryson DeChambeau shot a 73 and was joined by fellow Americans Max Homa and Scottie Scheffler in a three-way tie for the lead at 6 under.

Tiger Woods, a five-time winner at Augusta National, carded a 72 to move into a tie for 22nd at 1 over.

Masters debutant Ryo Hisatsune, the other Japanese participant, missed the cut after posting back-to-back 78s.
