Japan's Hideki Matsuyama slumped to a 4-over 76 in the first round of the Masters Tournament on Thursday, the 2021 champion sitting 11 shots off the pace in the year's first major of the PGA Tour.
The 32-year-old carded five bogeys against a single birdie at the par-72 Augusta National Golf Club for his second-worst start to the tournament.
Bryson DeChambeau had eight birdies and a bogey to take a one-shot lead over his fellow American Scottie Scheffler. Five-time winner Tiger Woods was 1-under after No. 13 when the round, which began late because of inclement weather, was suspended due to darkness.
Matsuyama's putt let him down as he missed birdies on both Nos. 3 and 4 from a few meters out before he three-putted on the sixth for his first bogey and also bogeyed on the seventh and 13th.
He had his first birdie on the 16th but ended on a downer with back-to-back bogeys, failing to sink one from just over a meter out in the final hole.
"It's disappointing. I presume they aren't going in because I'm not hitting them with confidence," said Matsuyama, who is tied for 75th. "I botched every putt I wanted to sink and it was wasteful."
"It hurts inside, but I will switch my mind and do my best not to exit after the second round."
His compatriot and Masters debutant Ryo Hisatsune struggled to a 78.
