Japan's Sota Yamamoto finished second in figure skating's Grand Prix de France on Saturday following the men's free skate, securing his first podium finish on the circuit.

Compatriot Kazuki Tomono placed third as Adam Siao Him Fa of France, who was third after the short program behind Yamamoto and Tomono, leapfrogged both to win his first Grand Prix event scoring 268.98 points in total.

Yamamoto botched his opening quad salchow but landed his ensuing quad-triple toe loop combination as well as a quad toe loop to end third in the free skate, raising his total to 257.90.

"I couldn't quite leave my mark in the Grand Prix until last season, even if I managed to take part. I'm really happy with this result," said Yamamoto.

"I'll be working hard in training to perform well on stages like this. I can finally start from here."

Tomono settled for fourth in the free skate but did enough to secure a medal.

"There's frustration with the result. I still found some difficulty with the free skate when a medal was at stake," said Tomono.

Sena Miyake, 10th after the short program, withdrew from the free skate.

In the third meet of the series at Angers Iceparc southwest of Paris, Japan's Rion Sumiyoshi won the women's bronze on her Grand Prix debut.

The 19-year-old Sumiyoshi, fifth after the short program, fell on her opening quad toe loop in her free skate but hung on to score 194.34 in total.

"I wanted to enjoy it more than anything. I could perform the way I wanted to a good degree and am happy to stand on the podium," said Sumiyoshi.

Mana Kawabe, third after the short program, finished sixth after falling twice with her jumps in the free skate. Fellow Japanese Rino Matsuike finished seventh.

Loena Hendrickx of Belgium won her first Grand Prix title after topping both segments to log 216.34. Kim Ye Lim of South Korea finished just above Sumiyoshi in second on 194.76.
