Japan's Sota Yamamoto topped the men's short program in figure skating's Grand Prix de France on Friday, followed by compatriot Kazuki Tomono in second.

In the third meet of the circuit at Angers Iceparc southwest of Paris, Yamamoto scored 92.42 points after completing all his jumps including a quad-triple toe loop combination.

He was adjudged to have landed his quad salchow on the quarter but came within 0.39 of his personal best as he seeks his first Grand Prix win.

"I could put in a good performance overall. I managed to produce what I've been practicing," said the 22-year-old Yamamoto, the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics gold medalist.

"I'm not thinking anything special about the title. I won't be hoping too much and will just concentrate on doing what I've been practicing," he said.

Tomono had to settle for second with 89.46 after failing to land his opening quad toe loop. Adam Siao Him Fa of France was third on 88.00, while Sena Miyake of Japan was 10th on 69.27.
