Japan has temporarily closed its embassy in Haiti as the security situation is deteriorating, the Foreign Ministry said Monday.

The ministry set up a temporary office in the neighboring Dominican Republic to protect Japanese nationals and provide other services after the embassy was closed Sunday.

The closure came after the ministry raised its travel advisory for Haiti to the highest Level 4 earlier this month, urging all Japanese nationals to evacuate and not to travel to the Caribbean country, citing kidnappings and criminal acts by armed groups.

In raising the advisory on Oct. 14, the ministry said there were demonstrations and strikes taking place in the metropolitan area and major cities amid prolonged political unrest in the country.
