- Tokyo confirmed 103 daily coronavirus cases Monday, marking the first time in about three months that the count has surpassed 100, as concerns grow over a gradual rebound in infections in Japan with the spread of the virus's Omicron variant.
- U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he tested positive for the novel coronavirus and that his symptoms are mild.
- About 84 percent of major companies in Japan expect the country's economy to grow in 2022, driven by recovering personal consumption amid hopes that the coronavirus pandemic will subside, a Kyodo News survey showed.

- Japan confirmed 554 daily coronavirus cases Sunday, a new high since the Omicron variant was first detected in late November, amid a steady increase of infections involving the highly transmissible strain in the midst of the country's New Year holidays.
