India reported Wednesday that over 200,000 people have died after being infected with the coronavirus, as the South Asian nation of over 1.3 billion people grapples with a new wave of infections.

The government also reported 3,293 new deaths over a 24-hour period, exceeding 3,000 for the first time for daily COVID-19 fatalities. The nation has had a total of 201,187 deaths as of Wednesday.

India also saw over 300,000 new daily infections for the seventh straight day, with more than 360,000 cases newly confirmed.

India has reported the second most virus cases in the world after the United States, while recording the fourth most deaths from the virus, after the United States, Brazil and Mexico.
