A team of Nepalese mountaineers on Saturday became the world's first to scale K2, the world's second-highest mountain, in winter, a Pakistani alpine group said.
Of the 14 mountains in the world that rise above 8,000 meters, only 8,611-meter K2 had not been scaled in winter.
The peak in northern Pakistan near China is known for its unforgiving conditions and is often referred to as the Savage Mountain.
A group of 10 Nepali climbers reached the summit Saturday, the Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed.
