Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. said Friday five of its group companies will donate a total of 400 million yen ($3.75 million) to support Southeast Asian students in Japan affected by the novel coronavirus pandemic.

One of the three major financial groups in Japan said the recipients -- the Thai Students' Association in Japan, the Association of Filipino Students in Japan and the embassies of Indonesia and Vietnam in Tokyo -- will each receive 100 million yen.

The Japanese financial group has partnerships with Bank of Ayudhya in Thailand, Security Bank in the Philippines, Bank Danamon in Indonesia and VietinBank in Vietnam.

"The donation will serve as financial aid to students from these four countries who may experience any economic hardship or have their studies in Japan interrupted due to the COVID-19 situation," Mitsubishi UFJ said in a statement, adding it "aims to contribute to the social and economic development of Southeast Asian countries."
