Defending world and Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu fell during training Thursday for the NHK Trophy, with the spill bad enough for him to require treatment.

Seeking his third straight NHK title on the weekend, Hanyu appeared to have hurt his right ankle when he fell while attempting a quadruple lutz while training for the figure skating Grand Prix event held at Osaka Municipal Central Gymnasium.

Hanyu, runner-up in his first Grand Prix event this season, last month's Rostelecom Cup, also failed to land a quad lutz on his right foot at that event in Moscow.

Hanyu returned to the ice after about five minutes, but did not attempt any jumps. He was seen to contort his face when putting pressure on the ankle.

After practice, Hanyu received treatment on the ankle and was unable to attend a press conference.
