Defending Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu tried his hand at a quad lutz in practice on Wednesday ahead of this week's Rostelcom Cup.

The first of six events in the International Skate Union's Grand Prix of Figure Skating, the Rostelcom Cup kicks off on Friday. The top scorers through six events will compete in the Grand Prix Finals, where Hanyu has won the men's title for four straight years.

At last month's Autumn Classic in Canada, Hanyu spoke of the high-difficulty, counter-rotating quad, saying, "It's not something I can't do."

At that time, he was prevented from trying the jump due to pain in right knee, but in Wednesday's unofficial practice, Hanyu attempted it five times. Unfortunately, he was unable to nail a single one.
