Russian security authorities said Tuesday they have asked a court to impose an administrative punishment on the captain of a Japanese crab boat seized late last month for allegedly fishing illegally in Russia's exclusive economic zone.

Hideji Kagami, the 52-year-old captain of the Nishino Maru No. 68, is expected to be fined, as the Russian authorities estimate the vessel's catch to be worth more than 39 million rubles ($596,000).

Russia said the crew members were not carrying documents necessary for fishing in the country's EEZ. All 10 crew members are being detained in Nakhodka, 90 kilometers east of Vladivostok.

The Russian authorities said 7.5 tons of crabs were found on the boat along with sardines and mullets, and 206 illegally installed crab traps were confiscated.

The 115-ton ship, owned by a fishery company in the western Japanese prefecture of Shimane, left a port in Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture, on Jan. 26 and was seized last Wednesday, according to Shimane prefectural officials.
