The Swiss Olympic Committee confirmed Friday that two of their athletes have been infected with the norovirus, the first cases of the virus among athletes at the Pyeongchang Winter Games.

The two are members of the country's ski team, according to the International Olympic Committee. They were separated from the rest of their team after they were suspected of catching the virus, IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said on Friday.

"We're aware that two athletes are feeling unwell. All the protocols are being taken. They're not staying in the village, I should say, and we're hoping they make a swift recovery...I gather it could be pretty swift and they could be competing as normal," Adams said at the IOC's press briefing before the confirmation the same day.

The athletes' symptoms are said to have subdued after being isolated, and they may still be able to participate in the Games if they obtain IOC approval.

According to organizers, a total of 244 people including security staff and other personnel have already been diagnosed with the norovirus, which causes vomiting and diarrhea. As of 4 p.m. Thursday, 188 had recovered, and 56 were still in quarantine.
