Sweden's Hanna Oeberg won her first Olympic medal on Thursday, claiming the women's 15-kilometer individual biathlon at the Pyeongchang Games.

Later the same evening, Norway's Johannes Thingnes Boe, the current World Cup overall leader, captured the men's 20-km gold, also his first Olympic medal.

The 22-year-old Oeberg hit every target and never looked back after taking the lead at the 9-km mark. She finished in 41 minutes, 7.2 seconds, beating two-time Olympic sprint champion Anastasiya Kuzmina of Slovakia by 24.7 seconds.

Kuzmina, who also won silver in Monday's 10-km pursuit, missed two targets but her speed on the course allowed her to overcome the one-minute penalties for each miss and still finish on the podium.

Germany's Laura Dahlmeier, the gold medalist in the 7.5-km sprint and the 10-km pursuit, was third, 41.2 seconds back of Oeberg after missing one target.

Fuyuko Tachizaki, whose husband Mikito also competes in biathlon for Japan, was the top Japanese finisher. With seven misses, she recorded a time of 50:06.9, leaving her 76th among the 87 competitors who completed the event. Fellow Japanese Yurie Tanaka, Asuka Hachisuka and Sari Furuya, came in 80th, 81st and 85th, respectively.

In the men's race, Boe missed two targets to finish in 48:03.8, 5.5 seconds ahead of runner-up Jakov Fak of Slovakia and bronze medalist Dominik Landertinger of Austria, who finished 14.2 seconds behind.

Although both Fak, the Vancouver Olympic bronze medalist in the 10-km sprint, and Landertinger, the Sochi sprint silver medalist, were perfect shots, they could not overcome Boe, despite the two penalty minutes his misses incurred.

Japan's only entry, Mikito Tachizaki, missed three targets and finished 64th, 6:07.7 back of Boe.
