One person died and dozens were injured, some seriously, after a Singapore Airlines flight from London hit severe turbulence, forcing it to make an emergency landing at an airport in Bangkok on Tuesday, the airline said.

The Boeing 777-300ER, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members, was en route to Singapore when the incident occurred, according to a statement from the airline. The aircraft was diverted to Bangkok and landed at 3:45 p.m. at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Kittipong Kittikachorn, director of the airport, identified the fatality as a 73-year-old British man who suffered a heart attack. Seven other people sustained severe injuries, he told reporters.

According to the airline, around 30 passengers and crew were either hospitalized or treated in hospitals.

The airline posted on Facebook that it is cooperating with local authorities in Thailand to provide necessary medical assistance and has dispatched a team to Bangkok to offer additional support.
