82% of 2025 World Expo entities see low public interest as challenge

OSAKA - Around 80 percent of Japanese companies and entities involved in the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka indicated concerns over a lack of public enthusiasm for the event, with about a year to go until its opening, a Kyodo News survey showed Sunday.

The questionnaire, which received responses from a total of 45 companies, sponsors and other organizations, also found less than 50 percent felt Japan's planned spending of 235 billion yen ($1.55 billion) for constructing the expo venue to be "reasonable."

Yellen calls on Chinese premier to engage in talks on global issues

BEIJING - U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Sunday that the world's two biggest economies should engage in conversations to cooperate on addressing pressing global issues, the U.S. Treasury Department said.

The United States and China have a "duty" to responsibly manage the two countries' complex relationship and show leadership in tackling global challenges, Yellen said at the beginning of a meeting with Li in Beijing.

University of Tsukuba to open 1st Japan college campus abroad in Malaysia

TSUKUBA, Japan - The University of Tsukuba is set to open a campus in Kuala Lumpur offering interdisciplinary courses in September, making it the first Japanese university to establish an overseas branch granting degrees.

The new department, the "School of Transdisciplinary Science and Design," will be targeted at students from Malaysia and neighboring countries and will aim to equip students with skills to help solve global problems affecting Southeast Asian countries, the University of Tsukuba said.

Universal Studios in Osaka to double foreign employees by year-end

OSAKA - The operator of Universal Studios Japan in Osaka is seeking to more than double the number of its foreign employees by the end of the year to beef up multilingual services amid a rising number of inbound tourists.

USJ LLC aims to hire 200 people from abroad such as South Korea and Taiwan for a year on working holiday programs, which allow young people to visit and work in partner countries and regions.

Taiwan quake death toll rises to 13, with 6 still missing

HUALIEN, Taiwan - The death toll of a deadly earthquake that tilted buildings and caused landslides in Taiwan rose to 13 on Saturday, while search and rescue efforts continued after the critical 72-hour period for survival passed in the morning.

Six people are still unaccounted for in the hardest-hit eastern county of Hualien following the Wednesday quake that registered magnitude 7.2 according to Taiwan authorities.
