Boxer Kazuki Anaguchi, who underwent brain surgery in December after being knocked down four times in his Japan bantamweight championship bout defeat, died Friday, the Japan Boxing Commission announced.

The 23-year-old lost consciousness after the 10-round decision at Tokyo's Ariake Arena on Dec. 26 that saw intense exchanges. He was taken to a hospital.

Anaguchi underwent surgery to repair a subdural hematoma, but his situation failed to stabilize. He was pronounced dead at 5:38 p.m. on Friday.
