Mohammadi wins Nobel Peace Prize for defending women's rights in Iran

OSLO - Jailed Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi won this year's Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for defending women's rights in Iran, where there have been nationwide protests against a legal requirement that they wear the hijab in public.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said it decided to award the prize to Mohammadi "for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all."

Sapporo to drop 2030 Winter Games bid, aim for future race

SAPPORO - Sapporo is set to abandon its bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics at the request of the Japanese Olympic Committee, and will instead aim to stage the games in 2034 or later, sources close to the matter said Friday.

The JOC does not want the city, which is the capital of Hokkaido, to give up its bid itself, as doing so would jeopardize their chances of bidding again for future games, the sources said.

Japan's top diplomat to visit, promote ties with 4 ASEAN states

TOKYO, Oct. 6 Kyodo - Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa said Friday that she will set off from Sunday for a six-day trip to Brunei, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand to promote security and economic ties with the ASEAN members amid China's growing regional assertiveness.

At a press conference, Kamikawa said that she intends to affirm continued collaboration with her ASEAN counterparts toward "upholding and reinforcing the free and open international order based on the rule of law" during her planned trip.

Japan gov't aims to seek Unification Church's dissolution on Oct. 13

TOKYO, Oct. 6 Kyodo - The Japanese government is making arrangements to seek a court order to disband the Unification Church as early as Oct. 13, government sources said Friday.

The move would follow a months-long probe into the religious group found its practices, including pressuring followers to make massive donations, constituted violations of the law.

Gymnastics: Daiki Hashimoto wins 2nd straight men's all-around at worlds

ANTWERP, Belgium, Oct. 6 Kyodo - Japan's Daiki Hashimoto won his second straight men's all-around gold at the gymnastics world championships on Thursday, becoming the only fourth gymnast to achieve the feat.

The 22-year-old logged 86.132 points in total in the final in Antwerp, Belgium, as he became the first back-to-back champion since his compatriot Kohei Uchimura, who won six straight worlds all-around gold medals between 2009 and 2015.

Japan household spending falls 2.5% in August on rising prices

TOKYO - Japan's household spending in August dropped 2.5 percent from a year earlier, declining for the sixth consecutive month, as rising prices prompted people to cut back on food and education-related outlays, government data showed Friday.

Households of two or more people spent an average of 293,161 yen ($1,975), the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said. The rate of decline was smaller than the 5.0 percent in July.
