Japan foreign minister Hayashi makes unannounced visit to Ukraine

TOKYO - Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi made an unannounced visit to Ukraine on Saturday, the Japanese government said, in a show of support for the Eastern European nation's defense against Russia's ongoing invasion.

It is the first Ukraine visit by the Japanese foreign minister since Moscow launched the war in February 2022. All other Group of Seven member nations have sent their foreign ministers to Ukraine after the invasion, making Japan the last to do so.

North Korea's Kim attends paramilitary parade to mark founding anniv.

BEIJING - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended a paramilitary parade with his daughter in Pyongyang late Friday night to mark the 75th anniversary of the country's founding but made no speech, according to state-run media.

The parade was staged by the Worker-Peasant Red Guards, a civilian defense organization, in the capital's Kim Il Sung Square ahead of Saturday's anniversary, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

Director Miyazaki's career recognized by San Sebastian Film Festival

TOULOUSE, France - Spain's San Sebastian Film Festival announced on Friday that it is awarding Japanese anime director Hayao Miyazaki its most prestigious Donostia Award for career achievement.

Miyazaki is expected to receive the award virtually during the film festival, held Sept. 22-30, where his latest work "Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru ka" (The Boy and the Heron) is making its European premiere. The film features a boy who lost his mother in a fire.

NEW DELHI - The placard in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Group of 20 summit on Saturday labeled India as "Bharat," amid controversy at home that his government may be trying to change the name of the South Asian country.

Bharat is an alternative name used for the nation along with India in its Constitution. So far, New Delhi had used India in English titles for its president and prime minister.

Japan child abuse cases hit record high of nearly 220,000 in FY 2022

TOKYO - The number of child abuse cases handled by child consultation centers in Japan reached an all-time high of 219,170 in fiscal 2022, marking an increase for the 32nd consecutive year, according to recent government data.

Psychological abuse, including physically abusing family members in the presence of children, accounted for about 60 percent of cases in which the centers took action, preliminary data released Thursday by the Children and Families Agency showed.

Ukraine counterattacks against Russia effective: presidential adviser

KYIV - A major Ukrainian counteroffensive mounted against Russia for the past three months has been "effective," and the attacks will continue until Russian forces withdraw, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said in a recent interview.
