Britain's King Charles and Queen Camilla crowned in ancient ceremony

LONDON - Britain's King Charles III and his wife Queen Camilla were crowned on Saturday during a religious ceremony stretching back more than one thousand years and steeped in ritual.

Around 2,200 guests, including 100 heads of state and members of the Japanese imperial family, crammed into London's Westminster Abbey to witness Britain's first coronation since 1953, when Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September, was crowned.

Japan PM attack suspect served fresh arrest warrant over explosives

WAKAYAMA, Japan - Police served a fresh arrest warrant Saturday on the suspect in an attack on Prime Minister Fumio Kishida last month alleging he illegally manufactured explosives.

Ryuji Kimura, 24, from Hyogo Prefecture was arrested on April 15 at the scene on suspicion of obstruction of business for allegedly throwing an explosive device at Kishida just before the prime minister was about to make a stump speech in Wakayama, western Japan. Kishida was not injured.

Quake-hit central Japan braces for more aftershocks, heavy rain

KANAZAWA, Japan - The central Japan prefecture of Ishikawa on Saturday remained on high alert for aftershocks and heavy rain after an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 hit the region the previous day, leaving at least one person dead and 27 injured.

Several buildings collapsed, and landslides and road depressions had been confirmed in the city of Suzu on the tip of the Noto Peninsula following the quake at 2:42 p.m. Friday, which registered upper 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7, and an M5.9 aftershock hours later.

The 2010 World Cup winner, turning 39 on Thursday, is set to play his final game for Kobe against his former side Barcelona in a June 6 friendly match, another source said Saturday.

Tokyo police develop quick test kit for date rape drugs

TOKYO - The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has developed Japan's first rapid test kit for determining whether a sex crime victim has been given a so-called date rape drug.

The "D1D plus" kit, developed in cooperation with the private sector, detects sleep-inducing drugs in urine in just several minutes, expediting the investigation process.

Hotels' part-time job offers surge as inbound tourism recovers

TOKYO - The number of job offers in Japan's hotel industry increased over 20-fold in the January-March quarter from a year before, as inbound tourism recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a Tokyo-based company that operates a part-time job application service.

Timee Inc. said the number of job openings in January was about 8.6 times higher than a year earlier, and the figure in February surged 23.3 times from the same month in 2022. It remained high in March, logging 13.4 times year-on-year growth.
