Host Japan placed third after the opening day of the six-nation World Team Trophy figure skating competition Thursday.
The United States topped the standings with a total of 50 points from the men's and women's short programs, as well as the ice dance rhythm dance program.
Ilia Malinin led the way for the United States in the men's short program, turning in 105.90 points for the world's highest score in the segment this season.
South Korea was second with 39, three points clear of Japan, at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
"Looking at our conditions, third place after Day 1 isn't bad at all," said Japan's team captain, Kaori Sakamoto, who was second in the women's short program.
"If we can enjoy competitions, the results will follow. I want everyone on my team to feel relaxed and skate over the remaining two days."
Each team is composed of eight skaters. Two men and two women compete in singles, with one pair and one ice dance couple also skating.
