Shohei Ohtani pitched just two innings before an 85-minute rain delay ended his day on the mound in the Los Angeles Angels' 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox on Monday.
At the plate, the two-way player had a pair of singles in five at-bats with a run scored on a rainy Patriots' Day at Fenway Park in Boston.
The long rain delay forced the Angels to go to the bullpen with a 5-1 lead after Ohtani allowed a run in two hitless innings.
"There's nothing I can do," Ohtani said through interpreter Ippei Mizuhara. "I felt like I could go back out there, but we didn't know how long the delay would be."
Ohtani walked one and struck out three, including Japanese compatriot and World Baseball Classic teammate Masataka Yoshida, who went hitless in four at-bats for the day.
"I couldn't hit his fastball in the end," Yoshida said of his at-bat against Ohtani. "I'll try to come up with something when I get to face him again."
Ohtani opened with a leadoff walk for his fourth consecutive start and threw two wild pitches before giving up an RBI groundout to Rob Refsnyder.
The Angels snapped a three-game losing streak with the help of Hunter Renfroe, who homered and drove in four runs.
Tucker Davidson (1-1), who relieved Ohtani, allowed one run in 3-1/3 innings for the win. Brayan Bello (0-1) took the loss.
At Oakland Coliseum, Seiya Suzuki went 3-for-5 with an RBI in the Chicago Cubs' 10-1 rout of the Oakland Athletics.
