Japan's Haruka Kasai won bronze Friday as Norwegian Gyda Westvold Hansen successfully defended her Nordic combined world title in Slovenia.

Germany's Nathalie Armbruster claimed silver as the top three jumpers maintained their rankings in the 5-kilometer race at the Planica Nordic Center.

Hansen scored 114.4 points for her jump of 91 meters before finishing the race in 14 minutes, 27.1 seconds. She crossed 11.5 seconds ahead of Armbruster, with Kasai, who earned 107.5 for her 96.5-meter jump, finishing 15.7 seconds behind the winner.

"I didn't make a World Cup podium this season, but I was able to hit my peak here," said Kasai, the first Japanese to win a world championship medal in the women's event, being staged for the second time. "I'm so happy to have won the bronze."

Kasai's twin sister Yuna was fifth, with Japan's Anju Nakamura seventh and Sana Azegami 21st.
