Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan exchanged views on how Japan can further support areas hit by a powerful earthquake in Turkey, during phone talks on Friday, a government official said.

Kishida's government has already provided humanitarian aid and sent a Japanese emergency rescue and medical team to Turkey.

The death toll from the earthquake, which devastated southern Turkey and neighboring Syria earlier this month, has surpassed 40,000, according to figures collated by authorities in the two countries.
