Mai Mihara won the women's singles gold at figure skating's Grand Prix Final on Saturday, wrapping up a successful competition for Japan after world champion Shoma Uno claimed the men's crown.

Japanese skaters took three out of the four senior categories contested at the Palavela in Turin, with Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara winning the pairs a day earlier.

The 23-year-old Mihara, who was second to compatriot Kaori Sakamoto after the short program, earned the highest free skate score of 133.59 points, racking up 208.17 overall to win in her Grand Prix Final debut.

She reeled off a double axel and a triple lutz-triple toe loop combination to open her routine, which included three more clean triples.

Isabeau Levito of the United States jumped three places from the short program to finish second on 197.23, with Belgium's Loena Hendrickx third on 196.35.

Reigning world champion Sakamoto dropped four places after faltering on multiple jumps in her free skate, finishing on 192.56, with Japan's Rinka Watanabe 3.45 points ahead of her in fourth.

A "surprised" Mihara said she had yet to come to terms with the biggest win of her career, but still wanted to make further improvements.

"I can't believe I'm wearing the gold medal around my neck," Mihara said. "More than that, my mind is on making my free skate flawless. There are still a lot of areas I can strengthen."

A disappointed Sakamoto said she had "no choice but to accept the result."

"I was feeling my feet weren't on the ground the entire four minutes (of the free skate)," Sakamoto said. "I couldn't get things ignited."

Beijing Winter Olympic bronze medalist Uno earlier in the day won his first Grand Prix Final gold after scoring a personal-best 204.47 in the free skate to win comfortably with a 304.46 total.

He became the first Japanese skater to win the men's title since Yuzuru Hanyu won it four years in a row from 2013 to 2016.

Japan's Sota Yamamoto was second with 274.35, while American teenager Ilia Malinin was third with 271.94.

Miura and Kihara on Friday edged ahead of American world champions Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier for the pairs gold, claiming Japan's first medal in the category at a Grand Prix Final.
