Japan's 17-year-old Kao Miura topped the men's short program and Shoma Uno came second Friday at Skate Canada, the second event of figure skating's ISU Grand Prix series.

Miura landed his opening quad salchow-triple toe loop combination and also a triple toe loop midway through the mistake-free performance to score 94.06 points.

"I did well to put things together and that was positive," said Miura, who came second at the series-opening Skate America last weekend.

Last season's world champion Uno opened with a successful quad flip but failed with his ensuing combination involving a quad top loop to settle for 89.98.

"It was a performance that really went the same way as in training," said Uno, who did not appear too concerned about his mistake.

Matteo Rizzo of Italy is third on 81.18.

In the women's short program, Japan's Rika Kihira, who missed the Beijing Olympics with a stress fracture in her right ankle, placed eighth on 59.27 in her first series outing in three seasons.

"It wasn't bad but not good either," said Kihira, who under-rotated her triple salchow-triple toe loop combination early on.

"My body wasn't moving as much as I expected and I hope to improve on that in the free skate," she said.

Madeline Schizas placed top with 67.90, followed by fellow Canadian Gabrielle Daleman (66.65) in second and American Ava Marie Ziegler (66.49) in third.

Japan's Rinka Watanabe is currently sixth on 63.27 and Yuhana Yokoi 12th on 54.87.

Japan's Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara sit top in the pairs after logging 73.39 in the short program. In the ice dance, Misato Komatsubara and Takeru Komatsubara are seventh on 68.88 after their rhythm dance.
