Wataru Tanigawa and his younger brother Kakeru were named to Japan's team on Sunday for this year's artistic gymnastics world championships in Liverpool.

Wataru was fourth on the horizontal bar at this weekend's national apparatus championships at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, the final qualifying event for the worlds, which will run from October to November. His younger brother was second on the pommel horse.

Kokoro Fukasawa and Ayaka Sakaguchi were named to the women's team. Fukasawa won the uneven parallel bars for the first time, while Sakaguchi had three podium finishes.

In Liverpool, three men and women will compete to earn Japan berths in the 2024 Paris Olympic team overall competition. The men's overall team includes Tokyo Olympic double gold medalist Daiki Hashimoto.

Sunday's selections were made based on the results of April's national championships, May's NHK Cup and this week's competition, where Sara Yamaguchi won the women's balance beam and floor exercise. As a 14-year-old, Yamaguchi is too young to compete at the worlds.
