An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 hit Taiwan early Wednesday rattling the southeastern part of the island, local weather authorities said, with one person reported injured.

According to the Central Weather Bureau, the quake occurred at around 1:41 a.m. local time and registered lower 6 on the island's seismic intensity scale of 7 in Taitung County in the southeast.

The temblor at a depth of about 30 kilometers was felt across much of the island, with local media reporting one person was injured due to broken windowpanes. In Taitung, the quake also caused a water pipe rupture as well as a partial road closure after a large rock fell.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said that parts of the Nansei island chain including Miyako Island may experience slight changes in sea level for a couple of hours but there was no danger of a tsunami.

The focus of the quake was off Taiwan and about 280 kilometers west-southwest of Ishigaki Island, the agency said.
