Barcelona will host artistic swimming's final qualifier for the Tokyo Olympics from June 10 to 13, swimming's world governing body FINA said Friday, after it was unable to stage one in Tokyo.
The event was originally scheduled for March at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, the Olympic venue. It was postponed to May 1 to 4 due to COVID-19, but FINA and the tournament organizers could not resolve their differences on some issues, including infection countermeasures.
FINA at one point expressed an intention to cancel the event. The body tried to find an alternate date and venue in Tokyo but was unable to secure one.
Swimmers from Olympic host nation Japan will not compete in Spain.
