The global death toll from the novel coronavirus has topped 3 million, with the pace of increase accelerating from mid-March, a tally by Johns Hopkins University showed Saturday.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases around the world has surpassed 140 million despite vaccinations proceeding, the U.S. university data showed.

By country, the United States alone has reported over 31 million cases with some 566,000 deaths, making it the hardest-hit country in the world.
The U.S. death toll was followed by over 368,000 in Brazil, 211,000 in Mexico and 175,000 in India, according to the tally. The death toll in Japan topped 9,500.
The global death toll exceeded 2 million on Jan. 15 after breaking 1 million on Sept. 29 last year.
