Due to the coronavirus pandemic, players from China, South Korea and Taiwan did not participate, while those from another strong badminton-playing nation, Indonesia, withdrew during the opening stages.

The women's doubles and mixed doubles are also all-Japanese finals, while the women's singles will see Japan's Nozomi Okuhara, ranked fourth in the world, take on world No. 11 Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand.
