The 35-year-old Chen has won 95 games in elite competition since coming to Japan with the CL's Chunichi Dragons in 2004, with 59 of those wins coming from his time in the majors with the Baltimore Orioles and Miami Marlins.

The lefty led the CL in ERA in 2009 and moved to the majors in 2012. His deal with the Tigers appears to be for two years with an annual salary of $2 million.

In September, Chen returned to Japan with the Pacific League's Lotte Marines and went 0-3 with a 2.42 ERA. He became a free agent when he was not offered a contract for 2021.

"The CL was the starting line for my pro career," Chen said in a statement released by the Tigers. "I want to do my best and strive to win a pennant so that the Hanshin fans will support me from Day 1."
