An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 rattled northeastern Japan on Saturday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. No tsunami warning was issued.
The 11:44 a.m. temblor, which originated at a depth of about 40 kilometers off Miyagi Prefecture, registered 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Aomori, Iwate and Miyagi prefectures.
An intensity of 4 means that most people are startled and would be woken up from sleep by the quake.
There were no immediate reports of casualties in the region, according to authorities.
No abnormalities were found in nuclear power plants in Aomori, Fukushima, Ibaraki and Miyagi prefectures, including both Fukushima Daiichi and Daini, their operators said.
