Two-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka withdrew from Saturday's Western and Southern Open women's final due to a leg injury, the tournament organizers announced.
Osaka, the fourth seed and a wild card entry, had entered the tournament looking for her first championship since October. Instead, the title went to 59th-ranked Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, who like Osaka is a former world No. 1.
"I'm sorry to have to withdraw today with an injury," Osaka said. "I pulled my left hamstring yesterday in the second set tiebreak and it has not recovered overnight as I had hoped. This has been an emotional week and I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of support."
On Wednesday, Osaka announced she would not play her semifinal to draw attention to police violence in the wake of the weekend shooting of black man Jacob Blake by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and a number of other high-profile cases including the killing of George Floyd by police in May.
The tournament, however, suspended play on Thursday, and her semifinal with Belgium's Elise Mertens was played Friday.
