China's health authorities on Sunday reported 16 new symptomatic cases of coronavirus infections on the mainland, of which nine were imported from abroad.

The National Health Commission said in its daily report that all but one of the seven domestically transmitted cases detected in the 24 hours to the end of Saturday were reported in Heilongjiang Province.

The northeastern province on the border with Russia has recently seen a flare-up of infections.

The remaining local infection was in the southern province of Guangdong, the commission said, adding that no new deaths from the virus were recorded Saturday.

The overall tally of confirmed cases on the mainland now stands at 82,735, it said.

The commission also said that on Saturday 44 new asymptomatic cases had been identified, and that 999 asymptomatic cases were still under medical observation.
