An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 hit Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido on Thursday, just days after a powerful typhoon struck the west of the country.

The 3:08 a.m. quake has destroyed houses, caused massive multiple landslides and cut power supplied to all 2.95 million homes in the prefecture.
