U.S. President Donald Trump has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit Washington in the fall, the White House said Thursday.

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a Twitter post that Trump has asked his national security adviser John Bolton to invite Putin, and that "those discussions are already underway."

Sanders made the announcement hours after Trump tweeted that he looks forward to "our second meeting" after his talks with Putin on Monday in Finland.

Trump said he wants the two countries to start implementing on some of the issues the two leaders discussed, including terrorism, security for Israel, nuclear proliferation, cyberattacks, trade, Ukraine, Middle East peace and North Korea.

"There are many answers, some easy and some hard, to these problems...but they can ALL be solved!" he said.

Trump has faced sharp criticism from Congress after siding with Putin over the U.S. intelligence agency finding that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

In their talks in Helsinki, Trump and Putin agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation on reducing the two countries' stockpiles of nuclear arms and ending North Korea's nuclear weapons development.

Putin expressed concern about the U.S. withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in May, while Trump condemned Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region in 2014 as "illegal."
