Chicago Cubs right-hander Yu Darvish was placed on the disabled list with right triceps tendinitis and will undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury, the National League club announced Saturday.

Darvish was originally scheduled to start in Sunday's series finale against the San Francisco Giants, but with the DL move retroactive to Wednesday, the Japanese righty will not be eligible to start until next Saturday against the New York Mets.

"We're not overly concerned. We're just going precautionary method right now to make sure everything is good based on the fact the guy has had a history," Cubs' manager Joe Maddon said according to the team's website.

"When I talked to him in my office, it didn't sound awful, but it sounded like something was there. As opposed to throwing him out there and be proven wrong, listen to your athlete. We thought it as the best way to do it."

Maddon said Darvish, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2015 and missed the entire season, had been trying to work through soreness in his right tricep all week.

"He's been bothered a little bit recently. We thought we could work through it, but there's some inflammation," Maddon said. "We're calling it tricep tendinitis, so we want to back off to make sure it's all well."

It is Darvish's second time on the DL this season, after being sidelined with flu-like symptoms earlier this month.

Darvish earned his first win in a Chicago uniform and 150th win of his career in the majors and Japan last Sunday, when he fanned seven and held the Cincinnati Reds to a run on two hits in the Cubs' 6-1 victory.

The 31-year-old signed a $126 million, six-year contract with the Cubs in February after stints with the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Dodgers. In eight starts this season, he has one win and three losses with a 4.95 ERA.
