Shohei Ohtani hit his fourth home run of the season in the Los Angeles Angels' 4-3, 10-inning loss to the New York Yankees on Friday night.

The two-way phenom, batting fifth as the designated hitter, gave the Angels a 1-0 lead when he drove a 1-1 fastball from Luis Severino deep into the right-field seats at Angel Stadium.

Ohtani grounded out to second in his next at-bat in the fifth before being lifted for a pinch hitter two innings later due to a mild left ankle sprain. He is listed day to day.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said after the game, "The ball was there. He was close to beating it out, and he just rolled his ankle a little bit."

"We took him out as a precaution. We'll evaluate it tomorrow."

The Yankees tied the game at 3-3 in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Brett Gardner, and Didi Gregorius homered to right-center in the 10th.

Ohtani's compatriot Masahiro Tanaka is scheduled to pitch for the Yankees on Saturday against the Angels.

The Angels rookie homered in three consecutive games in the first week of April, one of them off two-time Cy Young winner Corey Kluber of the Cleveland Indians, and struck out 12 batters over seven scoreless innings against the Oakland Athletics on April 8, earning him the AL Player of the Week award.

In October 2016, Ohtani injured his right ankle while running the bases in Game 5 of the Japan Series and had to miss the 2017 World Baseball Classic.
