Voter turnout in Sunday's House of Representatives election was estimated at 53.83 percent for single-seat constituencies, which would mark the second-lowest level since World War II, according to a Kyodo News tally.
The turnout calculated as of 11 p.m. Sunday was slightly up from official voter turnout of 52.66 percent for single-seat constituencies in the previous lower house election in December 2014, the postwar record low.
The number of early votes cast rose to a record high of around 21.4 million but turnout on Sunday was low as Typhoon Lan brought heavy rain and strong winds.
Some regional election boards in wide areas of Japan said they will delay vote counting for the latest election until at least Monday due to public transportation disruption caused by the powerful typhoon.
Sunday's election was the first lower house race in which 18- and 19-year-olds were able to vote, after a legal change took effect last year.
