Third choice Deirdre stormed to victory in the Shuka-sho on Sunday, capturing the final jewel in the filly's triple crown under yielding conditions at Kyoto Racecourse.

Jockey Christophe Lemaire, who rode to his fourth Grade One victory of the season, was singing in the rain after steering Deirdre to her maiden G1 title in their first partnership.

The Harbinger daughter, out of the Special Week dam Reizend, beat fourth pick Lys Gracieux by a length and a quarter for the 92 million yen win. Mozu Katchan, the fifth choice, came in third while favorite Aerolithe fizzled to seventh.

Deirdre had finished sixth and fourth in the first two races of the series, the Oka-sho in April and the Japanese Oaks in May. Her winning time in Sunday's 2,000-meter race was 2 minutes, 0.2 seconds.

Lemaire gushed about his filly, who improved to 5-for-14 for her career. Trainer Mitsuru Hashida netted his first G1 title of the year.

"She's a fantastic horse, came on strong at the end," said the Frenchman, a 14-time G1 winner in Japan. "We got off to a bad start and couldn't find the position we wanted during the trip. But the pace was fast enough for her to catch up in the end."

"She has a great closing rush, accelerated so well to the finish. She felt very good when I worked her this week, and I had a lot of confidence going into the race."
