WBC bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka will attempt to match a Japan record of 13 consecutive world title defenses when he takes on Mexican challenger Luis Nery this summer, Teiken Gym officials said Wednesday.

In a bid to ink his name alongside former WBA light flyweight champion Yoko Gushiken in the record books, Yamanaka will face the 22-year-old top-ranked contender at Shimadzu Arena in Kyoto on Aug. 15.

"The best stage has been set up for me. I'm getting fired up. If I beat Nery, (the record) will naturally come with it," Yamanaka told a press conference. "I believe he's the strongest opponent among all my title defenses. I'll try to move my feet and hit him with my left."

A video message from Gushiken was played at the event, with the boxing great expressing his wish that Yamanaka, a 34-year-old lefty from Shiga Prefecture, will reach the landmark.

"I'm really glad. I want to report to Gushiken-san (after the bout) that I've matched him," Yamanaka said.

Yamanaka has a 27-0-2 record, including 19 knockouts, while Nery has won all his 23 bouts, 17 of them by knockout.
