A U.S. naval strike group led by the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson will end its month-long mission near the Korean Peninsula on Wednesday night, the South Korean navy said.

The Carl Vinson arrived in the Sea of Japan, east of the Korean Peninsula, in late April in a show of force amid heightened tensions, after North Korea's repeated test-firing of ballistic missiles and signs it may carry out its sixth nuclear test.

In a show of force, the San Diego-based, Nimitz-class, nuclear-powered flattop and some accompanying warships held joint drills with the South Korea's navy while operating there.

Their departure comes as a strike group led by another aircraft carrier, the Nimitz-class, nuclear-powered Ronald Reagan, has been sent to the Sea of Japan from its home port of Yokosuka near Tokyo, according to Japanese government sources.
