The Japan Sports Agency and four other of the country's sports governing bodies signed the Brighton Plus Helsinki Declaration on Women and Sport on Monday.

As the host country for the 2020 Games, the JSA, Japanese Olympic Committee, Japanese Paralympic Committee, Japan Sport Council and Japan Sports Association publicly agreed to the 10 principles set forth by the declaration to promote gender equality in sport.

The declaration, which was updated and adopted by the working group of the World Conference on Women and Sport in the Finnish capital in 2014, also includes 27 recommendations intended to increase the involvement of women in sport at all levels.

"I hope to take this as an opportunity to do my share in empowering women in sport by boosting the number of women in leadership roles and helping them improve their social status," said JSA Commissioner Daichi Suzuki.
