Taiwan's health authorities on Tuesday confirmed a man in his 30s diagnosed with mpox has died, the first known death from the virus on the island.

The man displayed related symptoms in August before seeking medical treatment the following month which led to him being diagnosed with mpox and HIV, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control said.

The patient was unvaccinated against mpox and died Nov. 1 despite treatment. The disease, formerly known as monkeypox, typically causes high fever and rashes, and serious symptoms can last for some two to four weeks

Since June last year, Taiwan has reported 355 mpox cases, including those transmitted locally and abroad, according to the disease control agency.

A significant increase in mpox infections has been seen in the Western Pacific and Southeast Asia regions since July this year, the agency said.
